If you are one of those parents who are tensed due to their kid’s eyesight deteriorating because of endless hours spent on screened devices, then send him/her to play outdoor games. Yes you heard us right.
As per a recent study, your kid’s eyesight may get hampered by viewing smartphones, gaming consoles, computers and tablets constantly. For those kids that have Myopia-also called as near-sightedness and short-sightedness, playing outdoor games in the sunlight might help, say the experts.
As per the experts, the lack of natural light is the key reason behind having Myopia. Annegret Dahlmann-Noor, consultant ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, was quoted as saying to BBC Health that the main factor is the lack of exposure to direct sunlight as the students who study a lot and those who use smartphones or computers a lot have minimal opportunity to play outdoors and thus are less exposed to sunlight.
Although stopping or limiting the screen time use of children may be a difficult task for the parents, the best thing to do here is to get the child play outside as much as possible, the experts say.
Chris Hammond, professor at King’s College London, was quoted as saying to BBC Health that myopia or short-sightedness is becoming more common. Protective of myopia development is time outdoors; sport and leisure outdoors are protective of eyesight. Probably on average, across the week and the weekend, two hours a day outdoors is protective of becoming short-sighted in children, he added.
The experts suggest that a diet rich in omega-3 essential fatty acids, and vitamins A, C and E and nutrients work wonders for the back of the eye. The five food items that you can include in your child’s diet for better eyesight are broccoli, citrus fruits, almonds and walnuts, apricots and fish. Besides, the experts further said that a regular annual check up of the eye can also help.
