Nintendo recently published their nine-month period ending (December 2017) financial performance. It does not come across as a surprise that the company has managed to exceed its expectations by two-folds. Nintendo has primarily experienced a rise in both, sales and profit, thanks to exclusive gaming titles such as ‘Super Mario Odyssey’ and ‘The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.’
According to a report published by Gamespot, Nintendo sales result represented a 176 percent increase over the same period in 2016 with the total accumulation summing up to $7.9 billion. The company managed to reach a profit of $1.4 billion, which is a 494 percent improvement when compared to their performance of 2016. The game developer has accredited their success to the sale of their Switch hybrid gaming console. They said that the gaming console, “sold well following the launch and sales rose substantially during the holiday season.” Nintendo Switch’s hardware sales have managed to reach over 12.13 million units in total. When this sum is added to the 2.74 million units that they managed to sell back in 2016, the lifetime Switch sales amounts to 14.87 million units. In other words, in just ten months, Nintendo Switch has almost certainly outsold the Wii U (Nintendo has not yet provided updated Wii U sales figures), which has been available since 2012.
As far as the software is concerned, ‘Super Mario Odyssey’ sales have managed to reach 9 million units worldwide in the nine-month period. Apart from this, the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which was launched back in April 2017, has managed to make a sale of over 7.3 million units. In addition to this, Splatoon 2 managed to reach 4.9 million units in the market. According to Nintendo, it now has eight million-seller titles for the fiscal year but includes games published by third parties in this figure. The total software was listed as 47 million units, notes Gamespot.
